Generate Literature Maps

Literature review is essential in research, offering a comprehensive understanding of

  • Existing knowledge
  • Identifying gaps, and
  • Informing new investigations.

It ensures researchers build upon existing work, avoid duplication, and contribute meaningfully to their field. There are many tools that are useful to organize literature review including google scholar.

Google Scholar is helpful, but it doesn't show how papers relate to each other. That's where Litmaps (Literature Maps) comes in. It speeds up your literature review by letting you visually search for connections between papers (i.e. it helps you find related papers to your topic and also displays the number of citations for each paper and the year). Plus, it lets you easily export your papers to Zotero or other referencing manager tool.

To get started with Litmaps, just follow these steps:

1. Access Litmaps Website and Log In : Go to litmaps.com and sign in to your account.

2. View features Overview: Litmaps may display new features it added, read if wish otherwise simply click on Continue.

3. Create Your First Litmap: Click on Create your first Litmap located on the left side. A search bar will appear, allowing you to search for papers using keywords, titles, author names, and more. Specify details that you are looking in search bar.

4. Select Papers and Generate Litmap: Review the list of related papers and their abstracts. Choose the papers that are relevant to your research and click on Create Litmap Litmaps will then generate a visual map based on the selected papers.

Tip for Finding More Papers: Click on Explore related articles to discover additional papers related to your topic. Litmaps will automatically incorporate these new articles into your map.

5. Understanding Litmap Orientation: Litmaps arranges papers based on citations along the Y-axis, with highly cited papers at the top. Papers are ordered chronologically along the X-axis, with recent papers on the right.

Tip for Paper Information: For each paper, Litmaps provides the number of references and citations it has garnered.

6. Exploring Similar Papers: If you're intrigued by a particular paper, Litmaps offers an option to find more papers similar to it. Click on "More like this" below the paper, and Litmaps will integrate additional related papers into your map.

Tip for Discovering Related Papers: Click on a specific paper in the graph. A popup box will appear. Select Overview, and Litmaps will generate a map of papers related to the one you've chosen.

7. Organizing Papers with Tags: Navigate to the tag button located in the taskbar on your left. Give your tag a title. To tag papers, select any paper on your map and utilize the tag option. Tag the papers you intend to read or cite.

 8. Exporting Papers to Your Reference Manager: To export papers to your reference manager, click on the relevant tag. You'll see a list of papers with that tag. Click on the down arrow (Export) button at the top-right corner. Choose the desired format compatible with your reference manager (BibTeX for Zotero and Mendeley, RIS for EndNote), and download the file.

9. Importing to Zotero: For Zotero users, open your Zotero desktop app and click on File. Select Import and click "Next." Navigate to the BibTeX file you just downloaded and add it. Zotero will import all the papers and organize them into a new collection.
